Loudspeaker driver surrounds DIY
In the past, speaker repair services were scarce, often expensive, and replacement surrounds for DIY nearly impossible to source. The web has improved this, surrounds are widely available, but of variable quality. Even so, for a few vintage Hi Fi drivers of unusual size, suitably sized good quality generic surrounds or reasonably priced OEM parts aren’t available.
Gonna try this again. First time was trying a new way to embed a flash video in a blog page that didn’t work right. Rather have a link for this.
Interesting method of replacing the surrounds on old speakers. Gonna have to try this on the 15″ drivers in my newest pair of old speakers. Looks quite doable with a router and couple of bits. Don’t think I’ll go the plaster of paris route though. Will most likely route the grove in one piece of wood or mdf and then line it with plastic wrap and mix up some water putty, fill the grove with it and screw another piece of wood over the top till the putty cures and go from there. Don’t think I’ll go with the silicon to coat the fabric with but will most likely use wood glue of some form or another. Will try to get pictures of it as I do it and do a how-to post on it if it works out.
